Sam Que | Can anyone shed information as to the Apollo 17 lunar maps from the Gene Cernan Collection which have appeared on several RR Auction? Who created the display and initially started selling them? There seems to be a steady stream of these maps showing Gene Cernan holding the original lunar landing book. I have seen similar maps at Spaceflori.com which were all purchased within a few days. Thanks in advance for any information. |
garyd2831 | I have one of these map plates that I obtained from Mike at Moonpans a couple of years ago. The page sizes are around 8x10 inches and are on a heavier card stock. Gene Cernan added a "declaration sticker" which is signed on each of these pages. These are not the same pages that Florian had on his site a couple of months ago. The white area where the declaration sticker is located is probably used for notes and mine has the word "Tsilokovsky" for the crater and "N" direction arrow. |
Sam Que | I assume both style of autographed maps came from Gene Cernan's personal collection but were signed differently? Also any idea who put together the display with the Cernan photo mount. Also, I noticed the Florian maps sold at a higher cost. I am curious as to why the price difference. |
LateApex | I'd like to learn more about these too. Any additional info would be much appreciated. |
Larry McGlynn | The lunar map displays were created by David Frohman of Peachstate Historical Consulting. He bought the book directly from Gene (that is why there is only one photo of Gene). Then Peachstate broke up the book and sold the maps page by page. He also sold to dealers like Florian. I think Mike at Moonpans bought his from various collectors who were selling their maps. I heard that the maps and pages from the lunar surface checklist were completely sold out, but I am probably wrong. The question is, "Does the COA stuck right to the front of the map plate detract from it?" Personally, I think it does, but it is flown and that is something for the collector. I have one, but the COA sticker is on the back and out of sight. |
Philip | Probably 24 to 48 photos in the original Apollo 17 "CSM Lunar Landmark Maps" file used onboard America in December 1972. |
nasamad | I'm of the same opinion as Larry on the stickers. I don't think it's a good way of marking the item as coming from Cernan's collection, as I also feel about the handstamp and signature type declaration on some of his items. I think handwritten will always win out over stamps or stickers but sadly these guys are all getting older and with age comes joint problems so we cant expect them to continue writing lengthy quotes and inscriptions for much longer. |
